The Tata Literature Live! Lifetime Achievement Award is given to an author whose body of work has made an outstanding contribution to literature. A cherished literary name in India, Anita Desai was one of the early contemporary Indian authors to be internationally recognised. She took Indian writing in English to new heights with her blend of lyrical style, ease with different cultures, and clear-eyed examination of society and relationships. Her authorship has spanned more than 50 years, with memorable works such as Fire On The Mountain, Cry The Peacock, A Village By The Sea, The Clear Light Of Day, Baumgartner’s Bombay, and In Custody which was made into a classic Merchant Ivory film.
Past recipients of this Award include Ruskin Bond, Shanta Gokhale, Sir Mark Tully, Sir V S Naipaul, Amitava Ghosh, Mahashweta Devi.
Anita Desai is a multi-award winning author. She is a member of the Advisory Board for English of the National Assembly of Letters in Delhi and holds Fellowships at the Royal Society of Literature in London, the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York and Girton College, Cambridge University. She teaches at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
