Dante’s Paradiso relies on ecstatic accounts of divine light, which frequently overwhelms the poet’s sense of sight. How was a Renaissance or Baroque painter of naturalistic scenes to convey the ineffable nature of divine light when limited to material pigments? We will look at how a few artists have created effects that seem to transcend these limitations to evoke visions of heavenly glare.
