Every translator must achieve a transformation that is, in the words of the great practitioner Charlotte Mandell, “something else, but still the same”. Two leading translators of Marathi fiction into English analyse the strategies that they use to resolve the tension between the “same” and “something else”. They also talk about the specific challenges posed by the languages they work with.
