“I and the public know/What all schoolchildren learn/Those to whom evil is done/Do evil in return”. What is the underlying psychological mindset behind the worsening milieu of greed, hatred, violence, in the world today? Does the concept of evil – or for that matter good – “in return” always prevail? What mental, emotional and aspirational complexities and compulsions drive human behaviour in the public space? Is society set to implode or is a course correction possible? If so what psychological and cultural tools need to be applied? Ashis Nandy, one of India’s leading political psychologists and futurists, has spent a lifetime studying these issues.
